Global Warming

“Global Warming- a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants,” according to dictionary.com.

Some scientists say global warming is increasing as humans put more heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere.

Others argue that global warming is simply happening naturally.

Regardless, the warming trend causes warm temperatures, sea level rises, and ice losses.

Some say the warming causes the natural weather phenomenon to become more powerful.

According to pbs.org, the U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says that the world has reached ¨a pivotal moment¨ in global warming. He told world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly that they are not doing enough to combat a ¨direct existential threat.” He wants the International Paris Climate Change Accord to be put into effect. U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from this pact.

President Donald Trump has his own plans to combat global warming. He replaced the Clean Power Plan, and insists that states come up with their own rules to make coal-fired power plants more efficient. The Clean Power Plan wanted to reduce emissions from the power sector by 32% by the year 2030. EPA(environmental protection agency) suggested that the new plan would decrease carbon dioxide by no more than 2% compared to doing nothing at all.

The United States is the leading country in decreasing carbon dioxide emissions. The U.S. has decreased their carbon dioxide footprint by over 18% from 2000 to 2014. U.S. carbon dioxide emission levels fell by 12.4% between 2005 and 2017.  Renewable resources, the U.S. shale gas production, and natural gas substituting for coal contributed to the decline in 2005.
