Teachers were inspired in different ways to begin their professions.
“I’ve wanted to be a teacher since third grade because of my teacher Mrs. Morrison, who was very kind, and I always wanted to help people,” said Mrs. Janet Bishop, who has been teaching at CHS for 14 years.
Helping others is a familiar reason.
“Coaching inspired me. It’s basically teaching. Helping people learn things was awesome for me; I enjoyed that part,” said Coach James Banks, who has been teaching at CHS for one month.
“When I was like five-years-old, I pretended to be a teacher, and from then on, I wanted to be one,” said Mrs. Kimberly Dooley, who has been teaching at CHS for 20 years.
“I had really amazing teachers when I was growing up, and I highly respected them,” said Mrs. Sheri Williams, who has been teaching at CHS for 15 years.
“I was inspired by my public school teachers when I was growing up; I wanted to give what I received,” said Mr. Henry Walker Jr., who has been teaching at CHS for 21 years.
Some teachers favor teaching one particular grade level over the others.
“I prefer to teach juniors because they have matured a little bit and don’t think they know it all,” said Mr. Patrick Riley, digital applications and personal finance teacher, who has been teaching at CHS for two years.
“Ninth graders are great to teach because they are learning about high school and going through their days as a freshman,” said Banks.
“I don’t really have a favorite grade; it just depends on the mix of kids,” said Williams.
“I like teaching all grades, but I probably would not like to teach juniors because of the SOL,” said Mrs. Amanda Riley.
“I don’t have a favorite. I like them all,” said Walker.
Although the teachers enjoy their current subjects, they have others that interest them.
“I would like to teach P.E., so I could wear shorts,” said Riley.
“I would enjoy teaching psychology. The more you know how your mind works, the better your mental health can be, and students could benefit from that.” said Bishop.
“I would teach English because I love language, or maybe psychology because I think that’s fascinating too,” said Williams.
“I would like teaching science because you’re basically teaching others about life. History could be about life, but science is really about life,” said Banks.
“I think I would enjoy teaching Latin because it can help people in the medical or legal field,” said Walker.
