Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan, is a novel about a troubled young boy who discovers that his father is a Greek god.
Percy is given a quest by his mentor, Chiron, to retrieve Zeus’ master bolt in order to stop a potential war from breaking out in Olympus. Young and ambitious, Percy, after uncovering his true identify as Poseidon’s son, accepts the quest and travels across America with the help of friends Annabeth and Grover to complete it.
He encounters a variety of monsters and other setbacks that affect the group significantly. There are traitors among the demigods and Olympus, and the lightning bolt isn’t where they originally suspected it was.
The novel is fast-paced and exciting, and it’s an easy read for people of all ages. The several clever references to traditional Greek mythology adds their own entertaining twists.
I’d highly recommend this book to any lovers of mythology and fun, adventurous tales.
