Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, by Rick Riordan, is a novel about a group of young demigods braving the Bermuda Triangle to fulfill an important quest.
The magical tree outside of Camp Half-Blood is mysteriously poisoned by a dark force, and a camper named Clarisse is tasked with venturing into the “Sea of Monsters” to retrieve the legendary golden fleece in hopes of rejuvenating it. Displeased with this selection, Percy Jackson and his friends secretly follow her on this mission, and face a wide variety of monsters and foes as they do so.
The setting of the book is centered within the “Sea of Monsters”–the same ocean Odysseus braved in Homer’s The Odyssey.
The majority of the novel’s antagonists are the same, too, featuring mythological figures such as Circe and Polyphemus.
The book is an incredibly clever reference back to traditional Greek mythology with a fun, modern spin.
The Sea of MonstersĀ is an exciting, enjoyable book for people of all ages, and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the previous novel and is looking to continue the series.
