Chatham high school dress code still applies at homecoming dance.
As excitement builds for Chatham High’s annual Homecoming dance, so did the conversations about what everyone would wear, and what they were allowed to wear. This year, dress code became one of the biggest topics leading up to the event.
Students were reminded that all attire needed to follow school guidelines: no excessively short dresses, low-cut tops, or outfits showing midriffs. While the rules were meant to keep things respectful and school-appropriate, not everyone agreed with how strict they felt.
“I think the dress code is pretty reasonable,” VaNiyah White, freshman, said. “But since it’s at the ag center and not school so it shouldn’t apply.”
Teachers and administrators explained that the dress code isn’t meant to take away from the fun, but to make sure everyone feels comfortable and confident throughout the night.
Students may show up in a variety of stylish but appropriate outfits — from suits and ties to colorful gowns and sparkly dresses that followed the rules while still showing personality.
“I found something that fit the dress code and still looks good,” said freshmen Rayleigh Emerson. “It proves you can follow the rules and still be happy.”
