Ohio Senator J.D. Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz had a surprisingly ordinary, informative, and civil vice presidential debate this week in New York.
The two had conflict over the Capitol raid on January 6, 2021. They also tussled over immigration, but ultimately the discussion was very tame.
Walz questioned Vance about who he believed had won the 2020 election, and things heated up. Vance avoided the question and Walz went after him with fire.
“The democracy is bigger than winning an election,” Walz said. “The winner needs to be the winner. This has got to stop. It’s tearing our country apart.”
J.D. Vance had a shocking (to some) view on abortion laws. He once said that abortion should be illegal nationwide in 2022 when Roe v. Wade was overturned, but has since changed his mind.
“We’ve got to do so much better of a job at earning the American people’s trust back on this issue,” Vance said. Vance believes that abortion should be legal in certain circumstances and controlled by the states.
Both Donald Trump and Vance have changed their opinions and policies on abortion, with Trump believing the laws should be left to the states and Vance’s newfound open mindedness towards the subject.
Walz and Vance mostly spoke on domestic issues; however, they did discuss world issues like climate change and the conflict with Israel and Middle Eastern countries.
The two discussed issues that were meant to be discussed at the presidential debate, but successfully, without much rancor or derailment.
This was the best debate this country has seen in many years, and even though the vice presidential candidates may not sway many minds, more people should have tuned in to watch.
I believe J.D. Vance won the debate because he was very confident and well-spoken. He was able to represent Trump’s plans and policies arguably better than what Trump could say for himself. He was a great representative for what his party should actually be and what they stand for.
This is not to say that Walz really lost, because both candidates exchanged their ideas civilly. Walz was able to speak very well on Democratic party’s plans and ideas with his fresh perspective and knowledge.
Vance and Walz both wore outfits that were similar to their running mates fashions at the presidential debate. This makes them seem familiar and trustworthy to the people that already favor their partners.
Walz wore a navy blue suit and tie also with the flag pin, being the masculine parallel to Kamala Harris. Vance wore the exact same outfit as Trump- a navy suit, red tie, and flag pin.
