Students believe that it’s time for schools to install metal detectors.
“I believe it [metal detectors] will be good because kids are getting more and more dangerous as time goes by,” Bryson Kirby, freshmen, said.
For many students, safety is their biggest priority.
Many think that metal detectors would create a safer environment where everyone can focus on learning instead of worrying about what could happen.
“Every other school has a metal detector,” Jaiden Witcher, freshmen, said.
Not every student agrees that metal detectors are the solution, but many still see their benefits. Some worry about longer lines in the morning, or the school feeling too strict, but they think safety should come first.
“It shouldn’t happen because it isn’t necessary,” Raliyah Garnes, freshmen, said.
“I feel like they shouldn’t do it [install detectors],” Ari Bradley, sophomore, said. “People will get searched too much.”
“Metal detectors would be doing too much; they will be doing pointless searches,” Taryn Fitzgerald, freshmen, said.
Chatham High hasn’t had a major incident, but many believe that it’s better to prepare before something does happen.
Metal detectors could reduce the constant anxiety that comes with hearing news about school violence.
“I think we should get a metal detector because you never know what people got in their bags,” VaNaiya White, freshmen, said, “Our safety matters.”
Others believe metal detectors would discourage students from bringing drugs, vaping devices, or other prohibited items into the building.
Many students agree on one thing: the school needs to do whatever it can to protect students and staff.
