The Varsity Lady Cavaliers went up against the Carlisle Girls Basketball Team at Hargrave Military Academy in the MLK Basketball Showcase Event recently.
The team was ecstatic.
Jakiyah Giggetts got the defensive board and got fouled twice. She netted three out of four free throws to secure the game.
“The most exciting part was all our hard work throughout the game paying off in the end; it was a bit overwhelming, but in the end it felt amazing,” Mykaela Logan, junior, said.
Sydney Ward scored the layup to give the Cavs the one point lead.
“I am glad that the team played together and also held each other accountable for their mistakes and remained coachable throughout the game,” Sydney Ward, senior, said.
Teamwork was especially valuable.
“I’m happy that we played as a team and never gave up. It felt really good winning and just being with my team,” Ja’Mya Johnson, sophomore, said.
“It felt great and it was an exciting experience. Communication was one of the things we used most to get the win,” Ja’Bria Williams, freshman, said.
“This game showed us that we can beat the odds that are put up against us,” Allana Plummer, sophomore, said. “We are more like sisters who stick together through every trial and tribulation,”
Fans cheered loudly.
“I felt really proud of the team because the game was back and forth,; the girls worked really hard to pull off the win,” Sanaa Badgett, sophomore, said.
“I was very happy and proud that the varsity ladies did a fantastic job of winning against the odds; the people said they could not do it,” Ann Mayo, MarKayla Mayo’s grandmother, said.
“I knew coming into the game vs Carlisle that it would be a challenge and test for us, but I knew if we played together, stuck to the game plan, and played with confidence for 32 minutes then we could come out with the win. Our girls trusted in themselves and their teammates, and they never gave up, so to experience them coming out victorious was a moment I will not forget. Our girls have worked so hard so they deserved that moment. I was so happy and proud of them, the heart they played with, and their mental toughness. They deserved that win and there is so much more to come for them because of the hard work they have and continue to put in,” Coach Lauren French, said.
The Lady Cavaliers remain undefeated with a 16-0 record.
