Gym class helps students be physically active, but many students think other classes are more valuable in order to graduate.
“Having gym class be mandatory helps students be more active if they’re usually not, but the two years mandatory is most likely the best because it shouldn’t be mandatory all four years because there’s more important stuff that students need to get credits for graduating,” Coach Benjamin Burton, gym teacher, said.
“Having gym class be mandatory all four years would give us less time for all of our other classes that are important, but it being mandatory for the two years is good because it allows students to be active if they usually aren’t,” freshman Kendall Parsons said.
“I think gym class should only be taken one semester for one year because we should at least learn the basics about health, nutrition,” Lauren Coleman, freshman, said. “Coming up with an activity plan to stay healthy is important, but after that it should be up to us if we want to take gym again. When sophomore year needs to be taken seriously, gym classes would soon start to take away from our more important classes.”
“I think the two-year mandatory gym classes are good because we have the chance to learn about healthy lifestyles, but it takes away the chances of taking classes we need to take or want,” Sarah Moon, sophomore, said.
Other students believe gym class should be mandatory for all four years.
“I would make the gym class mandatory for all four years,” Jaiden Witcher, freshman, said. “It’s an easy class for an easy grade.”
“I plan to take gym class all four years, and I would make it mandatory for all students for the four years of high school,” Mariah Dickerson, freshman, said. “Gym class is a fun class that you can relax and have fun in, unlike all your other important classes.”
