Double standards are introduced into our lives even as young adults.
They can vary between genders and ages.
“When I think of the word controversy, I think of how some people think it’s okay to do something but not okay when someone else does it,” Sofia Hernandez, freshman, said. “The majority of the times I notice double standards are from my mother. If they were used against me, I’d feel sad and used and it would probably lead to me leaving them.
“One of my old friends had double standards, and she would be mad at me for defending myself, but when she would say something, it was okay,” Hernandez said. I don’t have any double standards personally because I wouldn’t want anyone to feel the way I did.”
“I think a double standard is when there are different expectations set for one person versus another,” Leah Oakes, junior, said. “They are constantly being used both consciously and subconsciously. Most of the time, these double standards are prejudiced.
“If a significant other had double standards toward me, I would leave him because life is too short to be dealing with that,” Oakes said. “My parents expect more of me than my brother. He is late to school everyday with no punishment. However, if I was late, I would get yelled at. I believe that I accidentally have double standards.”
Similarly, teachers at CHS feel the same.
“Double standards to me are when a group of people is given different standards than others,” SeƱor Brown, Spanish teacher, said. “I see them being used often in school as there are students given a different test because of accommodations given by the school.
“If it was coming from a loved one, I wouldn’t say anything out of fear of conflict,” Brown said. “I have experienced double standards in college when I was unable to receive a scholarship because they were only for minorities. I don’t have any double standards toward students. I go out of my way to make sure everyone is treated equally although it might offend some who have been given special treatment in the past.”
“My definition of double standards is when two people are held to different standards for the same task,” Adam Tate, computer teacher, said. “Sadly it is something that is a daily occurrence whether it’s intended or not.
“It would feel a little disheartening from a loved one to not be fair. Double standards have been used against me, for example, When I myself was in school I was expected to get top grades while my sibling just needed passing scores. It’s something I became okay with later in life. I don’t intentionally have them, but at times, it can happen. Either because of mood or just a person’s ability being different then others.”
