Books transformed into film has always raised controversy.
“My favorite book to film adaptation is ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ because they kept it almost identical to the book,” Abigail Custer, junior, said.
“My least favorite film adaptation is ‘Percy Jackson,’ Ethan Jacobs, junior, said. “The book was phenomenal, but then they came out with movies and TV shows about it, and they aren’t the same as the books.”
Some students think the film adaptations alter the original story too much.
“Sometimes the films leave out important references that are important to understanding the storyline,” Jacobs said. “For example, in ‘Harry Potter’ there is so much in the books that the movies just left out.”
Another student said something similar.
“I think that film adaptations can do the respective book justice, but a lot of the time they just don’t,” Peyton Owen, junior, said. “They take too much creative freedom when writing the movies.”
Students think that books and films can be in the same media, but the screen writers need to stay more mindful of the books.
“I believe that they can be remotely in the same media, but not be too exaggerated when making the film adaptations,” Custer said. “If writers go over the top on the movie portion then it ends up straying away from the intricate details of the book.”
One student made another point.
“I feel like for younger audiences it’s okay for them to be in the same media,” Brooklyn Rigney, junior, said. “For example, Disney princesses were inspired by books. I also think that as I get older, the more opinionated about the topic I become.”
One student sometimes likes film adaptations more than the book that inspired them.
“The adaptations can sometimes be better than the books because the scenes are brought to life and help you view it because of the music and the background,” Custer said.
Multiple students do not agree and think it is not possible for you to like the film more.
“I think the film and the book can be equally as good, but I don’t think the movie can ever be better,” Owen said. “After reading the book, I feel like you have such high expectations, and I don’t think the movie can always meet and exceed them.”
“The adaptation can never be better than the book because the book gives you more details than the film does, and it allows you to expand your imagination and rely on your own interpretation,” Rigney said.
