An after-school job serves as an actual classroom for developing key life skills like time management, accountability, and professional communication.
Students get to choose between a variety of places where they want to work.
“I work at Learn N’ Play Child Care Center on 130 Camden St, Danville,” Anaysia Redd, senior, said. “I hate working after school because sometimes I overwork myself, and it turns into sleep deprivation. In order to not fall behind in school, I try to do my homework after school on breaks. My favorite memory from work is when it started snowing and me and my coworkers all asked our manager to leave.”
“I have been working at McDonald’s for almost a year on US-29 and 703, Chatham,” MarKayla Mayo, junior, said. “Depending on the type of day I had at school, debates on if I enjoy working after school. I balance school and work by moving hard in both regardless of pressure. My favorite memory from work is that I met my closest friend. The worst thing about my job is when we get a dinner rush. My advice to people who are struggling to keep up with work and school is to have a good job that you enjoy and be stable in everything first.”
“I work at Cherrystone Veterinary Hospital on 14390 US-29, Chatham, ” Madelyn Legge, junior, said. “I’m usually very tired after school which is why I would prefer not to work but I love money. My favorite thing about my job is the animals; I feel that I have a deep attachment to them. My least favorite thing about the place I work is how hot it is everywhere. The best part of my job is the people I have met there. The advice I give to the people is to get your rest in when you can and now is the best time to multitask while our brains are still young.”
“After school I work at Carini’s, my mom and dad’s restaurant on 3833 US-29 BUS, Danville,” Wilson Zavala, junior, said. “I like working better on a weekend rather than working after school. It helps to keep up with school by doing my homework on breaks. My favorite memory from my job is when I told a kid their total, it was $28.67 and the kid did the 67 hand motion. If you cannot handle working and doing school, then it just doesn’t work.”
