This week’s student spotlight is freshman Chyanne Martin.
The transition into high school can lead to new expectations.
“I didn’t have many new expectations,” Martin said. “Except that we’d get more freedom and our classes would be harder. My expectations were somewhat true about having more freedom in high school.”
The difficulty of fitting in can be a challenge to freshmen.
“I don’t think it has been difficult making new friends,” Martin said. “I’m involved in the Scholastic Bowl.”
A new classroom setting is introduced to freshman along with workload.
“I don’t have any favorite classes,” Marin said. ” I thought classes would be harder and we’ll be working up until the bell, but we get a lot of free time. One class I thought I was going to dread was algebra. I really enjoy this class the most.”
With a new environment also comes new memories.
“My favorite event so far has been Homecoming,” Martin said. “Then an awkward moment so far has been forgetting how to open my locker during the first week of school.”
Growth happens during freshman year along with challenges.
“My biggest challenge was having to study and actually remembering to do homework,” Martin said. “The transition to high school has been well. I have learned that I need a routine to be more organized.”
Martin is looking forward to new things in her freshman year.
“I’m excited for ACE competitions picked out for next year.”
Martin has advice for underclassmen.
“My advice would be if your hair looks bad it’s not the end of the world.”
