Students today should feel safe in their school community; currently, some do not because of the new locker regulations.
Many students don’t agree with the new locker changes.
“I personally think that the new locker change is difficult,” Martavion Younger, senior, said. “If there was an incident in the school, I would have to go all the way to my locker to get my stuff first. Going to my locker wastes time throughout my day. We’ve already been here for three years and never had them before so why change now? I don’t feel like we have enough time. I do like the fact that they have a secure code on them.”
Time management is a big issue.
“I feel like it is a waste of time because we have book bags for a reason,” Naomi Gregory, junior, said. “I hate having to go back and forth multiple times a day. We do not have enough time in between classes to get to our lockers, use the bathroom, and deal with the traffic in the hallway. My favorite part about the lockers is when I put in the code successfully.”
“I hate having to stop by my locker so much because it makes me late to class and to my bus in the afternoon,” Abigail Wyatt, freshman, said. “Lockers are not needed since we have bookbags. My classes are on the opposite side of the school from my locker, so I have to rush. I do like how big the lockers are and how much they can fit.”
Others see the benefits and are used to the change.
“I didn’t like the change at first, but I’m getting used to it now,” Sanaa Badgett, sophomore, said. “I feel like the change takes time away from socializing, which is my favorite part of having to come to school. It has not positively influenced my school life. I have to run to most classes after getting my binder from my locker. I like that I don’t have to carry my backpack around anymore.”
“I feel as if it’s a good change to the school,” Adam Tate, computer teacher, said. “It does not negatively affect my day at all. I don’t think we need the lockers considering the students don’t have textbooks as much anymore, but they do help with security. If kids were to plan out their day and what they would need, they would have enough time to go to the lockers after one class and the bathroom after another. I feel like it makes kids put it more effort at school when they don’t have their bookbag lying around and have to go get the items just for that class.”
