Academics can take a mental toll on students.
“My definition of mental health associated with academicsĀ is when my mindset is already bad and school makes it worse,” Sofia Hernandez, freshman, said.
“I think this means when you are depressed because of school, and it affects your grades,” Kennedee Coleman, sophomore, said.
“This is a thing because stress comes from school and grades, “Kaydence Wilkes, junior, said.
Teachers and staff can fail to notice the well being of students.
“We are frequently overlooked because they don’t consider how the work load is affecting students, “Hernandez, said.
“Sometimes they only care about if the work gets done not how we are doing, and that is something that needs to change, “Coleman, said.
“They neglect our feelings because they just want everyone to pass instead of worrying about us mentally. Teachers want us to learn our best which can’t happen if we aren’t our best mentally, “Wilkes said.
Teachers can make an effort to create a safe space for students.
“They can pay attention to students more instead of only caring about grades, Hernandez, said.
“I think they can create a classroom where students feel safe and comfortable talking to them about their problems, Coleman, said.
” The teachers can start to build a trusted relationship with their students or start having days where we chill in school,” Wilkes, said.
Creating an environment where teenage students feel mentally safe is important.
“I feel most safe talking to Mr. Williams because he always listens and is considerate of how we feel, ” Hernandez, said.
“I feel the most welcoming person in this school is Ms. Stafford she is a very nice person and is always willing to drop everything and listen, ” Coleman, said.
“Mrs. Riley is the best person to talk to about anything. She offers great advice and knows how to make someone smile,” Wilkes, said.
