Many students don’t realize how much work goes into maintaining a safe and enjoyable school environment.
The work and effort of employees should be better appreciated.
“I’m the business teacher,” Patrick Riley said. “I have to do lesson planning, copying, and just everyday work like vacuuming. I feel as if the work I put into my lesson plans goes unnoticed. I wanted to become a teacher because it offers me the opportunity to teach something I love. I really do enjoy being a teacher the majority of the time.”
Safety is another matter.
“My daily tasks include making rounds, talking to the students, and making sure everyone is safe,” Officer Crews, resource officer, said. “A big part of my job is keeping my kids safe, even if it’s not appreciated as it should be. I’ve been in law enforcement for 35 years, and I really enjoy it. I started working at this school because I really do love what I do, and I want to keep everyone safe.”
“My day consists of speaking to seniors, checking progress on college applications, checking GPA’s, and planning events for students,” Esther Darko, College Advisor, said. “I feel as if I connect with the seniors on a really deep level. I chose this position because I wanted to help students navigate their futures as I wanted when I was their age. I really love my job and being able to help students in need.”
Some employees are responsible for feeding hundreds of people daily.
“Throughout my day, I prepare meals for students, put up stock, maintain clean and sanitary conditions in kitchen, prep food for upcoming meals, run point of sale register during lunch and count down till the end of the day, Mandy Smoot, school nutrition cafeteria worker, said. “I feel as if people don’t notice the amount of work it takes to do the above job tasks, including heavy lifting and staying on your feet for almost the entire shift. I chose this job because it works well with my kid’s schedules. I enjoy my job for the most part, I just wish it paid more.”
There are also students who contribute their time to the growth of the school.
“I’m one of the girl’s basketball managers,” Sanaa Badgett, sophomore, said. “I wash laundry and water bottles, and I distribute jerseys. I feel like a big part of my job that no one realizes is how I go and figure out any problems anyone on the team has and try to help in any way. I decided to become a manager because I enjoy basketball and the job allows me to get a lot of volunteer hours. I really like this job, it’s very fun, and I love the team.”
“As the second basketball manager, I pretty much do the same things to help out the team,” Kennedee Coleman, sophomore, said. ” I clean and give out water bottles, wash clothes, and help out the coach. I also make sure the girls always have everything they need. I started this job because Sanaa convinced me as well as the volunteer hours. I love being able to go to the games and be with the girls.”
