Growing up, most everyone had a favorite cartoon.
Some students grew up watching Disney Jr. or Disney.
Most females liked the Disney princesses.
“My favorite Disney princess growing up is Princess Tiana because she was the first black princess,” MaKhayiah Hairston, junior, said. “My older sister introduced me to the movie. Tiana, in my eyes, shows little girls how to become hardworking women who work for what they want.”
“Moana has always been my favorite Disney character growing up because I’ve always wanted to travel and I love the ocean,” Naomi Davis, junior, said. “My sister helped me to understand the deeper meaning behind Moana. She is very adventurous and independent although she faced hardships, but she came out strong in the end.”
“Sofia the First was my favorite childhood Character because I liked her dress and that she had the ability to talk to animals,” Leah Oakes, junior, said. “My mom introduced me to the show and I enjoyed the show because I love animals and the theme song was a jam.”
“My favorite childhood character was Snow White because she was very sweet, kind, and pretty,” Jamesha Chalmers, junior, said. “My aunt introduced me to Snow White. After Snow White’s stepmom and stepsisters were mean to her, she still thrived and became a beautiful princess.”
“Belle was my favorite character because I used to think that she looked like me,” Brooklyn Rigney, junior, said. “My grandmother put on Beauty and the Beast one day for me after school. I also liked her because she liked to read.”
Other students preferred regular Disney television shows or movies.
“My favorite childhood character is KC Undercover because she was a young black woman who was very confident and was also a superhero for her country,” Janiyah Pinchback, sophomore, said. “My older sister showed me this show and ever since then I thought that she was hilarious, and she was someone who wanted to save everyone around her. The actor herself is pretty nice as well.”
“Simba from The Lion King was my favorite,” Baker Estes, junior, said. “Lion King was one of the few movies I liked. Either one of my parents would put it on and I would watch it. The movie was good and little me liked the plot.”
“Lightning McQueen from Cars was my favorite because I really liked cars,” Hunter Hawkins, junior, said. “I don’t remember who showed me this movie, but I know that someone took me to the movies to watch it. Lightning McQueen was a car that could talk and that made me like him.”
Some students liked superheros growing up.
“I liked Spiderman because he really stood out to me, and I can relate to him in many ways,” Kajayla Giggetts, senior, said. “I saw the superhero on Disney during an ad, and I started becoming interested in him. He showed me that anyone can be themselves and always stand up for what’s right no matter what.”
“The Flash was my favorite character because he was fast and he wore the color red; that was my favorite color at the time,” Emmanuel Linder Jr., junior, said. “I watched him on TV. He was a superhero I used to look up to.”
Others grew up watching Nick Jr. or Nickelodeon.
“I would have to say that my favorite childhood character would have to be Little Bear because he always went on small adventures,” Meagan Yeatts, senior, said. “My parents put the show on a lot when I was younger. I like Little Bear because the music and clips aren’t too loud and their colors aren’t bright. They have more pastel and calm colors that help children’s eyes when watching it. It’s not overstimulating for babies.”
“My favorite childhood character would have to be Tommy from Rugrats because his character was just misunderstood,” Jakiyah Giggetts, senior, said. “I saw it on TV one night when I couldn’t sleep. Tommy acted very generous with other people and he interacted with them how I interacted with people back then. I could relate to him significantly.”
