As the Yuletide season arrives, families around the globe celebrate popular Christmas traditions, both old and new.
Although every family has their own tradition, there are many traditions that are commonly practiced all around America. Most revolve around spending time with family, baking a Christmas meal, and decorating the house.
“We go to our granny’s house and do karaoke, play Christmas games, build gingerbread houses, and we eat Christmas dinner,” Takira Fitzgerald, senior, said. “We eat fried chicken, green beans, macaroni and cheese, deviled eggs.”
A time honored tradition is to put an angel or a star at the top of the Christmas tree, with the exception of the “Grinch Trees” which are usually bent over with a heavy ornament of some fashion.
Another tradition is to make a big Christmas dinner. It usually includes either a roasted turkey or a glazed ham, but it does vary by region. In Texas, they might have enchiladas instead of a ham in Virginia.
“My family opens presents and eats Christmas dinner at my grandma’s house,” Wyatt Haley, senior, said. “We used to do it at my grandpa’s house.”
It is also popular to visit relatives during the holidays, whether it’s an aunt, or grandma, or maybe a distant relative that’s rarely heard from.
“We wake up and go to our grandma’s house,” Anna Garrett, senior, said. “We eat breakfast and open the presents.”
