Should TikTok Be Banned?

One of the most current, controversial events is the potential ban of the popular app, TikTok.

The app has the potential to threaten the privacy and security of U.S. citizens, according to media reports.

China may be able to hack into your phone and collect personal data and information to spy on you.

“Personally, I don’t care whether they’re watching me or not. It’s no different than our government watching our every move, too,” said Dermont Kyle, senior.

People are concerned about what’s going to happen to the app.

For many, the biggest concern is how the people will react over the prohibition of the admired app.

“I think many people will be upset over it. It is not only entertainment to those who How Trump's TikTok ban might actually work — or not - Protocolscroll and watch videos everyday,  but it is also a source of income for content creators and influencers,” said Tiyara Fitzgerald, senior.

TikTok was originally called Musical.ly until it was changed back in 2018.

TikTok became extremely popular during the worldwide pandemic, Covid, because people were forced to quarantine to avoid getting sick.

The easiest way for people to stay in contact or entertained was through social media during the pandemic.

For a few months, that’s all people knew.

They made funny videos to post to shed some light on the depressing state that the world was in.

“If TikTok was to get banned, it would affect me immensely because I love to watch and make videos,” said Zaniah Bridgeforth, freshman.

However, Tiktok is more than an app used to make comedic videos.

It also educates people on important topics and life lessons.

“I learned so much from TikTok. People on TikTok educated me on political topics, religious topics, hacks, hairstyles, and more. It also helped me understand and respect another person’s perspective,” said Cailyn Murrell, junior.

Even though the app may potentially get banned, there are other alternatives such as: Triller, Snapchat, FaceBook, Youtube, and Instagram.
